comments!

Thanks for the comments guys, in response:

This was created in Illustrator, and all the colors can be seperated so that they can be printed separately on the transparency, also, the wings come off so that they can be their own part or the end product. I use the pen tool a lot, so It's kind of second nature to me to create my own image based off of things i see.

And, no, as of yet it has no name. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about maybe giving it horns, perhaps adding a second part to the wing that is a little more butterfly-like, and am looking for even more parts to add without making it too crowded, I'd appreciate any suggestions on that front as well.

Thanks!

Finished??

This is where I ended up as of today, I need to print the wing separately so that they can be a separate piece on the stuffed animal this will be becoming. I also dont want to print the second leg in a different position, though it would look more natural, it would make the sewing difficult, and make the animal look lopsided. Even as is, I am going to need to print it twice, regularly, and mirror imaged so that the animal will be symmetrical when put together :)

front leg :D

progress

I'm still unsure as to weather I want the back legs and tail to belong to the same animal, but I am in love with the snow leopard's tail, so if I decide to change it, it will be the back legs that change. The next step is the front legs, but I am still deciding what to use. I want to use a bird, but that seems almost too close to a gryphon, and I do want to create my own creature, not simply create one that already 'exists'.

wings!

I started working on the pieces, wing first, and this is the first part. I will have to print it four times, one for each side of each of the two wings. I'm not quite sure about the color, I might try to get away with printing the whole thing in one color, or do one print in black, and then a second print on the same fabric, but slightly off in a different color. I think the wing needs more yet, but I wanted to update the blog on progress before my mind wanders and I end up doing something else completly. Looking at it now, i may change the curve of the currently flat underside. :/

Inspiration...?

The majority of my free time is spent online, in a different world. Yes, the world of Warcraft. It causes my mind to be full of things that are ultimatly unimportant in the real world, but serves for interesting art inspiration because I think differently than the average bear. For instance, the level of game speak has evolved to the point that I could say something to a non gamer and they woudl think I was speaking a different language entirely.
Omg, that DK thinks he's so 1337, but IRL he's a total nub IMO. o.O

WTB something?

myth? truth? Fox news?

Still a controversy, the story from awhile ago about a strange creature that washed up on the beach is either a new species, or a manipulated photo. Either way, this photo has manipulated people's belief of the real and concrete. How does one determine if something so unreal is believable enough to become an urban legend? who decided that photo of Nesse was viable? Is there even a line drawn between real and unreal, or do things float around in a big pool, the shallow end fact, but still commingling with the stuff in the deep end?
click here for the story on Fox news

So I didn't do the most believable job on this one, it's just sort of a sketch as to the kind of creature I want to create. The current thinking is to create a toy/stuffed animal by designing images in Illustrator and printing them onto fabric. After they dry, I will sew them together and stuff it full :D
I have a kind of style in mind that I want it to be, with some of the inspiration being Blake's Prints, and some being... something else I've seen somewhere, the kind of style the good quality coloring books come in? I'm at a loss for how to describe it, but I will begin work on the images, and post progress for a little feedback.
Tomorrow I have to strip the giant screen in the studio so that it can be recovered for my 'animal'. I kind of want to see how big i can make it, but I know that stuffing can get expensive, so i should limit the size, of figure out an alternative means of stuffing it. Also, I'll need to get the machine from home, hand sewing this is NOT going to happen in this millenia.

Inherantly Manipulative?

This site gives you step by step instructions on how to be a more manipulative person!
http://www.ubersite.com/m/56148
could these steps be applied to art? or is it strictly manipulation of the human mind that follows these rules?

Impossible, but Beliveable?

Where do we draw the line in our mind to define that which IS real and that which LOOKS real? Photos can be a moment captured, the ultimate truth, but who's to say how much manipulation it takes to change that truth? Is the translation between camera, film, and photo paper enough manipulation for someone to argue the truth has already changed from the original? Perhaps the values changed, or the colors? How then, in this digital age, do our minds know where to draw the line between what COULD be true, and what we "know" to be false? and how do we determine if what COULD be true, is or is not?

I collected a few images from the internet that our minds tell us can not exists in our world, but are well done to the point that we do not question the image.
have fun :D

Project Numero Uno

I thought this might be a good thing to post, just so that i don't have to open Word every time I need to refer to it :D

Digital Printmaking Project 1
Manipulated or manipulating?

Introduction
ma·nip·u·late \mə-ˈni-pyə-ˌlāt\
1: to treat or operate with or as if with the hands or by mechanical means especially in a skillful manner2 a: to manage or utilize skillfully b: to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage3: to change by artful or unfair means so as to serve one's purpose : doctor

Advertisers have as their rhetorical purpose the presentation and exhibition of a product or service and the exhortation and coercion of the potential purchasing population to the extent that that population becomes actual. Simply put, advertisers try by the various means at their disposal to get people to buy the product or service advertised. Moreover, advertisers want potential purchasers to consider what is advertised to the exclusion of all other similar products or services. They therefore attempt to construct an advertisement that will fully involve the attention of the potential purchaser and which will have a suasive effect. Advertisers thus create a semiotic world in order to persuade their audience of the essential "rightness" of purchasing the product or service advertised.
Artists have manipulated the feelings of viewers since the beginning of art. Plato warned against the power of art as a dangerous delusion making us have feelings that go against our better natures. Consider the role of art in religion as in the many images of Jesus crucified. In Slaughterhouse Five Kurt Vonnegut writes of the traumatizing effects of one representation of the crucifixion on the book’s main character Billy Pilgrim:
Billy, after all, had contemplated torture and hideous wounds at the beginning and the end of nearly every day of his childhood. Billy had an extremely gruesome crucifix hanging on the wall of his little bedroom in Ilium. A military surgeon would have admired the clinical fidelity of the artist’s rendition of all of Christ’s wounds– the spear wound, the thorn wounds, the holes that were made by the iron spikes. Billy’s Christ died horribly.
To create an emotional response with an artwork is an aim of many artists, but true manipulation implies something more…sinister. Such manipulation often occurs because the artist or those who have hired the artist want something. Whether it’s power or money, there is a goal and the art of manipulation is the means.

Project Description:
Basically put the student is to create an image that either manipulates the viewer in some way or uses the concepts of manipulation (whether it’s on a personal or corporate level) as its theme. This image can be created using a variety of media including: photography, drawing, collage, sculpture, or raw food. The final product, however, will include as a component a three color screen print created using stencils printed digitally.
To complete the project the student will:
1. Research the concept of manipulation in its various forms with an emphasis on its use in art
2. Write an artist’s statement that offers the student’s definition of manipulation, provides examples from culture and art, and describes the student’s project, its intent and intended audience
3. Create at least ten preliminary sketches (these can be multi-media in approach)
4. Create a blog that will act as a sketchbook/journal for the project and will document the research and sketches
5. Give a five minute presentation of this blog to the class, with five minutes left for questions
6. Write a comment on at least three other student blogs
7. From the presentation and comments the student will create the final work incorporating the digital in some form as well as a three-color screen print
8. The student will document the work on the blog
The following criteria will be used in the grading of the artwork:
• The student understands the concept of the project and this is evident in the finished work
• Clear progression of ideas is visible through the sketches to the final work
• Application of skills learned in the Photoshop demo
• A demonstrated understanding of screen printing process

Manipulation, begining the thought process

MOOSE??

My first brilliant thoughts on this project: I'm awful at political jokes. really. In 8th grade I was asked to create a political cartoon... It was a bad. All I remember is having the WORST on in the entire class, despite my competence in the actual drawing aspect of the assignment. Apparently living so close to DC has not made my political funny bone any harder. I find myself able to use photoshop, but unable to think of anything worthy of manipulation. This will require great thought.

First off, this is assignment number one, my best attempt at a current event funny. At least it got a chuckle from the class :)

Disclaimer: I have nothing personal against the woman, I just don't think she should be in a position of leadership anywhere..... yeah.
